A history of creating environments that exist in ecological harmony with the land.
As is true at our neighboring residential community at Oil Nut Bay, the vision for the North Sound Yacht Club is to create a sustainable luxury yacht club that is in harmony with nature. This integration of renewable energy resources that use the sun, wind and global leading-edge eco technologies provides an essential part of the infrastructure.
North Sound Yacht Club is committed to the journey of environmental excellence that will continuously evolve as emerging state-of-the-art technologies, innovations and new ideas come to the marketplace.
Sustainablility Through Smart Design
Community buildings in North Sound Yacht Club are being built to achieve LEED Platinum standards. We are also implementing environmentally-conscious infrastructure foundations that will help NSYC respectfully maintain the integrity of the island's natural beauty.
North Sound Yacht Club Dock Design
Bellingham Marine, one of our partners in this enterprise, is a specialist in installing floating docks. The innovative design of the dock allows the underside of the dock to act as a floating ecosystem for marine life. Not only do docks of this type provide a more natural surface to interact with the aquatic habitat, they mean less bottom disturbances and reduced water turbidity that helps maintain water quality.
Additionally, the environmental integrity of the site is protected by the use of HDPE sleeves on the steel dock pilings. These sleeves prevent oxygen from interacting with the steel, slowing corrosion and deterioration. Selected for its ability to outlast other materials, locally sourced concrete is used on an "as needed" basis, helping to eliminate waste.
Infrastructure
Our construction team is implementing a variety of eco-progressive initiatives such as capturing wind and solar power to generate electricity for desalinization plants, air conditioning and refrigeration, utilizing zero-emissions G.E.M. cars (Global Electric Motorized Vehicles) for transportation, and using methane generated for organic waste to operate auxiliary energy generators.
- Solar-generated electricity is being used to power a reverse regenerative osmosis (RO) process to convert sea water to fresh water for drinking, showering and use in swimming pools.
- Most hot water required on site will be heated by solar energy, with electric heating as back-up.
- To minimize the amount of electricity used for water production, collected rain and "grey water" --water from sinks, showers, and other non-salt water waste sources-- will be collected and treated for use in watering the landscaping in all areas of North Sound Yacht Club.
- Road, pathway, dock and landscape lights will be solar-powered.
North Sound Yacht Club and Oil Nut Bay Environmental Team
North Sound Yacht Club and Oil Nut Bay are fortunate to harness the knowledge and expertise of visionary Dr. Larry Oswald as Environmental Team Leader. Dr. Oswald spent the last 10 years at the Chrysler Corporation as CEO of Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars LLC (GEM) subsidiary, growing GEM into a successful and profitable electric vehicle business, with nearly 37,000 vehicles sold world-wide during this time.
Through Dr. Oswald's direction, North Sound Yacht Club and Oil Nut Bay are setting a new standard in responsible, sustainable developments.
Today, Dr. Oswald is funneling his passion for conservation, recycling and renewable energy generation into North Sound Yacht Club and Oil Nut Bay. He directs the planning, installation and operational assurances of our integrated community services and energy management systems, making use of nature's abundance of energy -- wind and sun.
